I want to kick it all off with this magnificent watch, the Titoni Airmaster Pilot Automatic.
Why Titoni? Why not a more fancy watch, that makes the masses go wild? Not a chance! For me the Airmaster is the obvious watch to go with.
The classic, clean and timeless looks of this pilot, the raised Titoni-logo and the delicious arrow-marker at twelve makes this little beauty one of my favourite watches!
This Airmaster, the 83943, was produced between 2003 and 2006, and can be hard to track down these days. It is not the most expensive watch, but surely one of the best looking out there.
A flat sapphire crystal, 39mm case, w/o crown, 45mm lug to lug and a smooth 10mm height. For me and my wrists, that is about how nice a watch will wear! The sweetspot of comfort and smoothness!
The broad arrow minute- and hourhands are sharp and the seconds are counted by a long and elegant hand that goes to the edge, where the minutemarks elevates at a 45° angle and ends up kissing the bezel and the Sapphire. Ahh…
The lume is glows in a traditional green color. All three hands, the five-minute markers and four dots, at 3, 6, 9 and 12, are glowing gently in the dark. In the first years they were bright and bold, but after many years, they have gone into a more moody stage...
Inside you will find the steady ETA2824 with a reserve of 38 hours. Its an automatic that can be wound up manually and has hacking seconds.
The watch is fitted with a lovely, stainless steel bracelet with folding clasp and push lock. As a chickenwrist obsessed with comfort, the bracelet don't get much time in the sunshine. The nato goes straight on, and in my opinion it looks even better. The water ressistance is 10ATM and the crown is not a screwdown. For me the WR is not an issue, I don't use my watches in the water. At occasions I wear my 300ATM diver while doing the dishwases…
Still you might wonder why this brand stands out from the crowd? An excellent design, high quality and a good price can often be found in the world of watches. There are three other reasons why I adore Titoni.
The first of the three reasons is the statement above. It suits me like a glove. I can't stand trends! If someone tells me what is popular and what I should wear, I probably would never, ever wear it. If this years color is orange, i couldn't care less. Watches, clothes, music, movies, food...When I'm told what to like, i often end up disliking it. It's in my grumpy genes...
The second reason is that Titoni is a family business and not just a part of a massive conglomerate. They have made watches for 99 years, mainly with automatic movements. Even when the quartz-crisis hit in the 70's, they kept on focusing on automatics. Only about 20% of their watches were made with quartz movements.
I like traditional crafts. I try to use the local stores as often as I can. The optician on the corner, the local watchmaker or the store selling groceries produced nearby. Sometimes it it difficult not to choose the big storechains, but as often as possible, i will use my local heroes. That's how I see Titoni, a local hero that does their thing with passion and won't compromise on quality. Titoni's customers are not local. Their main business area is in Asia and the Middle East, and thats probably why the brands is not as well known here in Europe as the other companies from Switzerland.
The third reason is the most "hands-on" reason. It's called customer service...
I have experienced the whole range when it comes to customer service. Some has been so bad that I promised myself I would never own something from that brand again. Even if they knocked on my door with a replacement, I would have sent them home on the first train.
Titoni is at the total opposite part of that scale. I have been in contact with Titoni at several occasions and they never let me down. The response is quick, they take their time to solve my issues properly and they are extremly polite. The best part is when I contacted them by email to ask if could buy a new watchbox for my Airmaster. After 21 minutes they replied. The answer was "no". They would not sell me a new box, they would be more than happy to give me one for free, and even pay for the shipping! I was superhappy and thanked them for outstanding service, and their reply was that this is how they treat their customers. Try to get that answer from another brands...
For me, Titoni will always be a favorite brand. The "Master Series", "Cosmo", "Seascoper" and "Airmaster" are series in their male collection that I have a soft spot for. Some of the watches can be just a bit glossy for my taste, and some have roman numerals. That is just not me. I need arabic or none. But still, would i recommend Titoni? One hundred percent!
Now it's time for me to log of and take my beloved Airmaster for a walk.
